HOLLYWOOD, CA, USA, July 31, 2023 - SHINE ON HOLLYWOOD MAGAZINE (SOHM) CELEBRATES ITS SPECIAL FAREWELL ISSUE FEATURING OUR COVER STORY PAYING TRIBUTE TO AIDA TAKLA-O’REILLY, BARBARA MORRISON, JUDY TENUTA, MILT LARSEN, TONY BENNETT AND CELEBRITIES & FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO DIED IN 2021 – 2023. PLUS SOHM MOURNS THE LOSS OF THESE LONG-TIME SOHM TEAM MEMBERS: JOHN L. SEITZ, RON C. PECK, DEREK TADASHI TAKEUCHI, AND BILLIE JEAN EASLEY-VALENZANO CELEBRATING A DECADE OF REAL PEOPLE AND THEIR REAL STORIES. This special farewell issue's cover feature focuses on Aida Takla-O’Reilly. She was a teacher, a journalist, a mentor, the youngest female pilot in Egypt at the age of 16, a leader, a mother, and a friend. In 2011, she was re-elected to serve a second term as the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (“HFPA”) overseeing the global telecast of the Golden Globe Awards, the precursor to the Emmy and Academy Awards ceremonies. The HFPA, once again, chose this hard-working, talented, and passionate orator who was uniquely equipped to lead this colorful group. A member of the HFPA since 1956, she represented Dubai and was previously the organization’s president from 1994 through 1996. Takla-O’Reilly’s second term ended in 2013 and she went on to serve as a HFPA Trustee and Advisor to the President. Also in this issue, we lost a legendary jazz singer Barbara Morrison who inspired countless audiences with her talent. She grew up in the Detroit suburbs. Her father was a doo-wop singer, and she sang throughout her young years. She moved to Los Angeles in 1971 at age 21 and worked with blues great Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson with performances on “The Johnny Otis Show.”She appeared on dozens of albums including her own and as a guest vocalist. Her albums included “I Know How to Do It” (1996) and “Visit Me” (1999). She sought to give back to the community by collaborating to open the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in the Leimert Park neighborhood in Los Angeles, where she and local artists performed. She also went on to open the California Jazz & Blues Museum, which featured concert posters, instruments, and paintings by local artists. We also lost a woman known to fans as "The Love Goddess" and "Aphrodite of the Accordion," comedienne Judy Tenuta, who has passed away in her home in Studio City. One of nine siblings, Judy (after Judy Garland), was born in Oak Park, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), on November 7, 1949, into a Catholic family to a Polish mother, Johanna, and an Italian father, Caesar. She grew up in a staunchly Irish-Catholic neighborhood and attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she majored in theater. A straight-A student her entire life, Judy was the first of the Tenuta family to graduate college. Her interest in comedy began when she took an improv comedy class with the world-famous Chicago improv group The Second City and shortly after began opening for other comedians in Chicago throughout the 70s. Recently, the world lost one of the foremost magicians and illusionists with the death of Milt Larsen at the age of 92. In 2000, Milt was voted one of the 100 most influential individuals in the history of magic. His long and storied career included owning the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, writer for the TV shows Truth or Consequences and This Is Your Life. He worked with show business legends Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Buddy Ebsen and Steve Allen, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel, George Burns, and Jack Benny, among others. He was also considered the world’s foremost historian of the Vaudeville era. His impressive resume included being a long-time radio host and producing TV specials for ABC, CBS, and NBC. He was the creator and consultant for the $50 Million Caesars Magic Empire at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. In addition, SOHM mourns the loss of these long-time team members: John L. Seitz was a Senior Writer for SOHM for 3 years. Beloved by many, John was a modern-day version of “The Great Gatsby.” He threw lavish parties annually in his Bel Air home overlooking the Getty Museum. He loved entertaining with musicians and befriended all kinds of eclectic people. John was a kind soul with a quick wit and he could catch you off guard with unusually interesting and funny stories that only Hollywood insiders could know. He was also very kind and compassionate and helped others where he could. For several years, he was involved in public relations with the Hilton Hotels and worked with many Hollywood celebrities and even past U.S. Presidents. He also was the previous owner of the local publication the Beverly Hills Courier. Under Shine On movement, Ron C. Peck was the Executive Researcher and Production Coordinator story for the critically acclaimed "Humania" Documentary focusing on homelessness and mental health crisis. As Ron described it, he led an inspired life of curiosity and learning that was touched and nourished by many people. As a young boy, he was an amateur radio operator. By high school, he was the emergency radio operator for the Kenosha Police and Fire Departments. As a young man in the Army, he served overseas during the Berlin Wall conflict stationed on NATO radio sites. Later in life and for over 30 years, he traveled the world building nuclear medicine clinics. He was a devoted husband to his wife Carol Peck for 55 years and a loving father to their three children, Tonya, Tara, and RC. His passion for the martial arts and helping others led him to form a close friendship with Olympic Judo coach, Willy Cahill, with whom he co-founded the Blind Judo Foundation. For 17 years, while Willy took care of business “on the mat,” Ron worked at the Foundation daily to secure funding and support blind and visually impaired athletes so that they could compete at the very top of their sport. Derek Tadashi Takeuchi was SOHM West Coast Digital Marketing Solution Manager on and off for 8 years and a C.E.O. of Takeuchi Galleries, an International Art Dealer, with over 30 years in the Art Business. He was a filmmaker, special events producer, and branding expert Takeuchi Galleries Art. Derek loved life and his greatest goal after generating commerce through the business world and trade was to simply help others -- that was his greatest motivation to succeed. He felt wealth is not a success, however, money is a required tool to achieve objectives. He gave his time to personally encourage and help others to believe in themselves, assisting them in learning new skills and most importantly understanding what it is to have faith and share with them that God loves them. He felt that there is no greater accomplishment than helping someone “ignite” the greatness within themselves especially when they did not believe they could ever accomplish their life’s goals. He was mentored by the founder of SOHM, Arnold Garcia for 8 years. Billie Jean Easley-Valenzano passed unexpectedly and went home to heaven on April 17, 2023. She was the Fashion, Public Relations, and Digital Media Supervisor for Shine On Hollywood Magazine on and off for 6 years. She earned a Master’s in Business Communications from California North-ridge University and demonstrated excellence in virtually every facet of the entertainment field while focusing her talents on journalism: she was employed at numerous crème de la crème entertainment magazines as a writer/ editor; she excelled as an editor and producer; and she led television, film, and commercial development for Mark Alyn Productions. In 2017, she founded Beverly Hills Fashion Society focusing on fashion, film, and finance opportunities. BHFS’s mission was to strengthen the impact of global fashion and arts. Plus, various videos of Celebrities & Famous People Who Died in 2021 – 2023 and the world lost one of the last great entertainers with the death of Tony Bennett. The upcoming 11th Anniversary issue of Shine On Hollywood Magazine will feature the Daytime Emmy Awards 2022, (the 2023 Emmys are canceled due to the current writer's strike) presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, honoring the best in U.S. daytime television programming in 2021. Welcome to this special coverage from Shine On Hollywood Magazine. This special coverage from Shine On Hollywood Magazine. The May–June 2025 Special Edition is a heartfelt tribute to those deeply affected by the catastrophic wildfires that swept through Los Angeles earlier this year, to the victims who lost their homes, histories, and hope, and to the selfless heroes who stepped forward with courage during the darkest hours. Shine On Hollywood Magazine exists to do what few others won't: to pause, listen with empathy, document real lives, and tell authentic stories with compassion and depth. In a media landscape often dominated by fleeting headlines and sensationalism, this special edition invests its heart and soul in covering the truths that mainstream outlets tend to overlook. It is among the magazine’s most important and sincere releases to date. Every story within these pages aims not just to inform but to move readers deeply, inviting reflection, understanding, and recognition that for many wildfire survivors, the battle to rebuild and heal is far from over. At the same time, we celebrate those who rose to the occasion, showing what true community support and resilience look like in practice. There is an urgent need for more reporting like this, human, honest, and unapologetically connected. No excuses, only action. We hope this issue inspires readers to embrace their strength and greatness and reminds all of us of an essential truth: communities need each other, especially in moments of crisis. When the fires tore through neighborhoods, the losses extended far beyond physical structures. Along with homes, history was destroyed. Family heirlooms and treasured memories turned to ashes. Livelihoods vanished. And for many, the deepest loss was hope itself, a hope that may never fully return. This pain is not abstract. In the 1980s, our founder, Arnold Garcia, experienced a similar tragedy when his own home was consumed by fire. Without government aid or nonprofit assistance, he rebuilt his life from nothing, relying on the kindness of friends and sheer determination. Though that chapter had long been tucked away, the 2025 wildfires reopened those wounds, fueling a fierce resolve to give voice and dignity to victims and heroes alike. “What Now?” is far more than a magazine feature; it is a mission and a solemn promise that no story will be forgotten just because the news cycle has moved on. For many survivors, the journey toward recovery is only beginning. The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles, most notably the Palisades and Eaton fires, left a devastating mark on the region. More than 16,000 structures were destroyed, including homes, businesses, schools, and community buildings. Some estimates place the total as high as 16,251 structures lost, with over 200 more damaged. These fires further deepened an already critical homelessness crisis in Los Angeles County, which had more than 75,000 unhoused residents even before the disaster. The sudden displacement of thousands more, many of whom were without insurance or stable housing, strained emergency resources and challenged every aspect of long-term recovery. Tragically, at least 30 lives were lost, marking one of the deadliest wildfire events in LA’s history. But behind these numbers are real people, many still displaced, some sleeping in cars, couch-surfing, or facing homelessness. These fires didn’t just destroy property; they magnified LA’s worsening housing crisis and revealed cracks in our social safety net. VOICES FROM THE FRONT LINES Through exclusive interviews and first-person Q&As, survivors open up about their losses and the strength it takes to keep going. Meet those featured on our cover: • Harlan Boll, who said, “The fire took my home, but it also took pieces of my soul.” • Kevan Michaels, who watched his roof collapse, holding only his guitars and family photos. • Erinn Alissa Selkis, who lost her home, equipment, and irreplaceable keepsakes like her mother’s engagement ring and handwritten letters. These courageous individuals remind us: Even in the ashes, there is courage. Even in heartbreak, there is hope. But they still need our help, and it’s up to us to step forward. HONORING HEROES To the unsung heroes: Alex Otey, Marc & Malin Smith, Kenyan Armitage, Brent Harvey, and the many musicians, organizers, and donors, thank you for showing us what real community looks like. We also proudly recognize Myka Miller, Executive Director of the Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF). Those who endure such loss deserve recognition not only for surviving but for the grace and gratitude they embody in the face of unimaginable hardship. Their courage amidst the ashes and their hope in the face of heartbreak are powerful reminders of the resilience of the human spirit. Yet the need for support remains urgent. As a society, we share a collective responsibility to step forward together. The bravery and sacrifice of firefighters and first responders who risked everything to protect lives and communities demand our highest gratitude. Without their efforts, entire neighborhoods, perhaps entire cities, might have been lost. Their unwavering dedication inspires deep respect and heartfelt appreciation. This year, Shine On Hollywood Magazine proudly names the Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF) as its 2025 Non-Profit of the Year. In the wake of disaster, GCMF swiftly donated more than 400 musical instruments to artists who lost their homes and gear, restoring not just property, but purpose and identity. We urge readers to support verified crowdfunding efforts and local nonprofits like GCMF, which direct aid quickly and efficiently to those who need it most. In moments like these, donations should never be swallowed by bureaucracy or lost in administrative overhead. Every dollar, every act of kindness matters. To further amplify support, SOHM has partnered with GivBux, a powerful platform that transforms everyday purchases into real-time assistance for wildfire victims. Readers can participate by downloading the app and using the invitation code SOHM, turning simple daily actions into life-changing relief. This July marks a major milestone for Shine On Hollywood Magazine: nearly 13 years of elevating real stories from real people. Thanks to your support, we’ve continued this mission with compassion, free of clickbait, gossip, politics, and bias. The work is often volunteer-driven but always fueled by integrity and purpose.
