Link: https://shineonhollywoodmagazine.com/shinejanfeb2021/web/html5/index.html?&locale=ENG Life is precious. We are reminded of this every time we hear of someone’s death. This realization is especially powerful when the departed was a dear friend or someone you admired greatly. When a favorite celebrity or inspiring role model passes away, it can feel like losing one’s best friend. In this issue, we are celebrating the lives of two entertainment industry professionals who have died in the last year. Here at Shine On Hollywood, we like to honor people who dedicate their lives and careers to giving back to the community and helping others. One of the most apropos times to do so is after such a person has died. This isn’t just a way of remembering and saying farewell. It is also an important part of celebrating life. The cover feature of this issue is Marion Ramsey, a multi-talented actress famous for her role in the Police Academy franchise. She died at age 73 on January 7, 2021. Most people remember her as Officer Laverne Hooks, the squeaky-voiced sergeant with hilarious outbursts, from the first six Police Academy films. However, she had a flourishing career aside from these famous comedies. She was a powerful singer, performing in many Broadway musicals. She also played supporting roles in dozens of films and television series for over three decades. Get to know the “Dusky Diva” through intimate, emotional letters and memories shared by her friends, family, and fellow performers, who remember her as a bundle of joy, bucket of laughs, and ball of fire! Also in this issue, we are bidding farewell to another entertainment industry professional, Bill Bartlett. We lost this vibrant tap and ballroom dancer and teacher at age 80 on August 31, 2020. Although not a big-name star, Bill had a thriving performing career in films, television, and stage productions for six decades, performing with the musical greats of Hollywood’s Golden Era. His iconic dance style lives on through the countless students he inspired. Through an interview with his wife of forty-nine years, Debbie Bartlett, and letters from friends, family members, and students, we’re sharing with you a loving portrait of a wonderful performer, teacher, and man.
